About the type of Ring Joint Gasket

Ring joint gaskets are metal seals suitable for high pressure and high temperature applications. They are manufactured in two cross-sections: octagonal and oval.

Ring joint gaskets are used in connection with RTJ flanges to create a secure seal between two mating flanges. When the flange is bolted, the ring joint gasket is squeezed into the groove of the flange to form a tight seal between the mating flanges. To avoid damaging the flange, the ring joint gasket material must be softer than the flange material.

Basic Types of Ring Joint Gaskets

There are three types of ring joint gaskets: R type (including R octagonal gasket and R oval ring gasket), RX type and BX type. Style SRX and Style SBX are adaptations of Style RX and Style BX, respectively.

R-type gasket

R-type gaskets are divided into R octagonal gaskets and R elliptical ring gaskets according to different sections. R-type gaskets are used for pressures up to 5,000 PSI. Ring gaskets are considered semi-pressure energized ring gaskets. They are manufactured to API 6A and ASME B16.20 to accommodate API 6B and ASME/ANSI B16.5 flanges. R-ring joint gaskets are manufactured to all relevant standards to accommodate the following flange designations:

API 6A > ASME / ANSI B16.5 > MSS SP44 (ASME 16.47 Series A) > BS 1560

R Octagonal Gaskets are designed with an octagonal section. The average diameter of the R octagonal gasket is slightly larger than the average diameter of the gasket groove. The angle between the annular gasket and the inclined surface of the gasket groove is about 23°. Octagons are only suitable for modern flat bottom grooved flanges.

R Oval seals are manufactured with an oval section. Oval rings fit round bottom ring groove flanges. R Octagonal Gaskets and R Oval Ring Gaskets have a similar function: they seal by initial line contact or edge action when pressure is applied. However, the sealing efficiency of the R oval seal is lower than that of the octagonal seal.

RX type gasket

Style RX Gasket Meets API 6A and ASME B16.20 and is suitable for API 6B and ASME/ANSI B16.5 flanges. RX-type gasket is a special octagonal gasket developed and improved on the basis of R-type gasket. The contact between the gasket and the ring joint surface, especially the outer surface, has good sealing performance, and the compression maintains good sealing performance. Type RX gaskets are used for pressures up to 5,000 PSI. RX Ring Joint Gasket is a pressurized ring gasket.

Type BX Gasket

Type BX as a special octagonal gasket, manufactured according to API 6A standard, suitable for high pressure API 6BX flange. Model BX is designed for pressures up to 20,000 psi. All BX sizes have a pressure relief hole to equalize pressure on the seal faces. BX type ring gasket is a pressure ring gasket.

SRX and SBX Style Gaskets

SRX and SBX style gaskets are the same design as RX and BX style gaskets. They are manufactured to API 17D and are suitable for subsea wellhead and Christmas tree equipment. The "S" indicates that these gaskets have cross-drilled holes to ensure that any liquid trapped behind the annular gasket will flow to the ID hole. SRX ring gaskets are typically designed for subsea 6BX and/or 17D RTJ flanges.

standard

Ring joint gaskets are manufactured to any standard and non-standard sizes including API 6A, API 17D, ASME B16.20, DIN 2693-67, JPI-7S-23-72 and others to suit ASME B16 standards. 5. ASME B16.47 Series A and Series B, API 6A Type 6B and 6BX Flanges.
